Duty, VAT and conformity rules change. This guide reflects requirements as of 2026 and is general information, not customs or legal advice — confirm current rules with Oman Customs / the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion or a licensed clearing agent before shipping.

Oman’s industrial, utilities and construction sectors drive steady demand for electrical equipment, and India is a competitive, well-stocked source. Both India and Oman run on 230 V / 50 Hz, so low-voltage devices work without conversion. This guide covers the five things that matter: HS classification, duty and VAT, conformity, documentation and shipping. Prefer to buy from a supplier who prepares the paperwork? Step 1 — Classify your goods with the right HS code

Every item clears against a Harmonised System (HS) code, which sets the duty rate. Most electrical components sit under Chapter 85 — indicative headings below; confirm the full code for your exact product.

ProductHS heading
MCBs, RCCBs, switches ≤1000 V8536.20 / 8536.xx
MCCBs / circuit breakers >1000 V8535.xx
Contactors & relays8536.41 / 8536.49
Distribution boards & panels8537.10
Lamps & luminaires9405.xx
Electric fans8414.51

Step 2 — Understand duty and VAT

  • Customs duty: 5% of the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight) for most electrical goods, in line with the GCC common external tariff.
  • VAT: 5%, introduced on 16 April 2021 and administered by the Oman Tax Authority, charged on the customs-cleared value.

Worked example. On a CIF value of OMR 10,000, customs duty at 5% is OMR 500 and VAT (5% on OMR 10,500) is about OMR 525 — roughly OMR 1,025 in landed tax before clearing and handling fees.

Step 3 — Get conformity right

Electrical products must comply with Omani / GCC standards, and certain regulated products require conformity or registration through the Directorate General for Standards and Metrology. Confirm the exact requirements for your product list before shipping.

Step 4 — Prepare your documentation

  • Commercial invoice with accurate HS codes and values
  • Packing list with item-level detail
  • Certificate of origin
  • Bill of Lading (sea) or Air Waybill (air)
  • Conformity documents for regulated products (see Step 3)

Step 5 — Ship, clear and deliver

Sea freight from India typically arrives at Sohar, Salalah or Port Sultan Qaboos (Muscat); air freight suits urgent items. Incoterms decide responsibility: FOB / CIF leave import clearance and conformity to you, while DDP puts them on the supplier. Line up conformity before dispatch so the shipment isn’t held at port.
