Why HRC Fuses Are Still Used in Sri Lanka
MCBs and MCCBs have largely replaced fuses in new installations, but HRC fuses are still specified in Sri Lanka for several good reasons. Very high breaking capacity: HRC fuses can clear fault currents of 80–100kA — significantly more than most MCCBs in the same physical size. This makes them essential at main incomers close to CEB substations where fault levels are highest. No nuisance tripping: HRC fuses are inherently time-delay devices that don’t trip on motor starting inrush current. Low cost: HRC fusebase and fuse link combinations are cheaper than equivalent-rated MCCBs for high breaking capacity protection. Compact: For 125A at 100kA breaking capacity, an HRC fuse takes far less panel space than the equivalent MCCB.
